Dad and Pop

Every family history is full of traditions, values and love that is passed down generation to generation, and our family is no different. Filled with Italian culture and cuisine, our family’s traditions were passed down by our great-grandfather, Antonio Leonardo DiGirolomo, or as we referred to him, Pop. He was born in the Puglia region of Italy on July 19, 1885 and came to America when he was just 15 years old. Alone and with just the shirt on his back, he worked hard to build a life for himself in America. We opened the first Mici Handcrafted Italian location on July 19, 2004, in honor of Pop’s birthday and his love for family, friends and a fresh, homemade meal.

When our father was just six years old, his own father passed away. His grandfather immediately stepped in as a father figure for him. The two grew inseparable, and Pop became our father’s mentor and inspiration. Throughout their time together, Pop passed on his knowledge and traditional values of hard work and a tight-knit family, which our father then passed on to us.

Pop prided himself on fresh, wholesome ingredients. Over the years, he inspired our father with his knowledge of gardening fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables, wine making and using fresh eggs and meat from their chicken coop. One of Mici’s signature pizzas—one we grew up eating—is topped with olive oil, mozzarella and gorgonzola cheese, pepperoncini peppers, and pepperoni. The DiGirolomo – is our father’s creation and named in honor of Pop. Today, we share his value of fresh, clean ingredients in each of our dishes. Our mozzarella is hormone-free, we use only uncured, nitrate-free pepperoni, extra virgin olive oil, imported Prosciutto di Parma and Parmigiano-Reggiano. We don’t like fillers, preservatives or MSG. If we won’t feed it to our family, we won’t serve it to yours!

In addition to inspiring the name of one of our signature menu items, Pop also reminds us to work hard each and every day, while making our customers smile and putting family first! We strive to fill each of our locations with a culture that is rich with our values and authentic Italian culture. In true Italian form, we believe life revolves around the dinner table—sharing a meal with family. Each time you sit down for a meal at Mici, we want you to feel the love and traditions Pop passed on to us because you’re not just a customer—you’re one of us—part of the Mici family.
